…whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31b)
Vanguard - the youth ministry at Bridgeview - exists to help students experience and respond to God through Worship and Service. It is dedicated to minister to the needs of youth, leading them to spiritual commitments and disciplines resulting in spiritual maturity.
Why Vanguard?
In a dictionary, you'll find that Vanguard is:
1. the leading position of a movement, field, or cultural trend, or the people who are foremost in a movement, field, or cultural trend 2. the military divisions of an army or navy that lead the advance into battle
.... so why Vanguard?
Vanguard - because in today's challenging world young people are "at the front line of the battle". They are entering adult life, learning to make their own decisions and the right choices. They are also to become the future leaders of the church
VANGUARD Update
I think we can all take a deep breath now and let it out... At least some of us. School is finally closing its doors and summer is in full swing. Of course this also means graduation parties, camps, and teens being at home will probably control a lot of our schedules.
As I was trying to think of what to write for this newsletter, our 2010 graduates kept coming to mind. Obviously this is a huge step in their lives as they leave a more 'sheltered' lifestyle and transition into one of more independence. I recently read an article that talked about Christian teens that graduate from high school. I was blown away by the statistic that 4 out of 5 Christian teens will leave their faith within two years of leaving high school. That is 80% of our graduates! That includes those that may have grown up in the church, attending regular services every week! This update really made me think about not only my responsibility as a youth pastor, but the responsibility that parents have. In a couple of months, my wife, Kayla, and I will have our son Noah dedicated. It's my understanding that the point of dedicating our children is not only to give God free reign in their lives, but to also commit ourselves in front of the church to do everything we can to raise them in a way that they will experience a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ.
If our teens go through several years of our church ministries and go on to leave the faith, we need to evaluate the job that we are doing as a ministry, and as parents. We need to be very intentional about building a strong foundation for our teens so that no matter what they face in life, they can continue to trust in God.
I guess that's the message of this update. We need to continue to evaluate the example and principles that we are teaching our students. I believe with all my heart that this group of teens can make a difference in this area as we continue to invest in the next generation…
